Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, in continuity with the Etruscan times, wine growing had further developed and the pleasure for wine which was already appreciated for its good quality had evolved to the point that its different features could be distinguished.
As for the variety of wines in the market, besides a purer wine obtained with local grapes - that was also traded "allungato" or "acquato" or "acquatiçço" [Watered down] - Orvieto also imported other wines such as the "Greek" wine, the Genoese "vernaccia" and the "marchesiano" wine.
The importation of wines soon led to the transplanting of other grape varieties and so the trebbiano and the moscatello, the Greek velfianum and the vernaccia, sided the autochthon vines laying the foundations for the selection of the main components of the current Orvieto Classico.
